Types of Scholarships

Japanese Government (Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology) Scholarships

The Japanese government (Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology) has been accepting international students on government funding since 1954. Applications for this scholarship are accepting at Japanese embassies overseas or universities in Japan annually around April.

Scholarships from Organizations Supporting Students in Japan

JASSO (Japan Student Services Organization) supports two scholarships: the Monbukagakusho Honors Scholarship for Privately-Financed International Students, and the Student Exchange Support Program (Scholarship for Short-term Study in Japan). Criteria and eligibilty for application to these scholarships will differ depending on the institution at which you're currently enrolled, so please inquire with each educational institution for details.

Kobe City Scholarships

This scholarship is offered to privately-funded international students (in possession of student visas) enrolled at a university or graduate school in Kobe City (undergraduate students must be third year students or above). Please see the website for details.

Private Industry Scholarships

These scholarships are offered by private companies or private scholarship organizations. They may be offered on the basis of reflection of a company or organization's goals or values, only to students attending schools in a specific location, to students studying a specialization related to the company, or only open to students from countries or regions with which the company wants to encourage ties. Be sure to check the type of scholarship, personal qualifications, application qualifications, and payment information before applying.

Scholarships from Individual Universities

Some schools have performance-based scholarships or other types of student scholarship programs of their own. These programs and the requirements to qualify for each varies depending on the school, so please inquire with the school of your choice for details about such programs.

Scholarship Application Periods and Selection Methods

Scholarships Awarded Before Arrival in Japan

Most scholarships require application after coming to Japan, but there are some local government organizations and private companies in Japan that allow potential recipients to apply to scholarships from outside of Japan.

Scholarships Awarded After Arrival in Japan

These are scholarships awarded following arrival in Japan and entrance to a school in Japan. Qualifications and other details will vary depending on the scholarship.

Qualifying Exam

In cases in which document reviews are the only qualifications, written exams may be given (on general knowledge, specialized knowledge, Japanese ability, etc.), or interviews depending on the system at each scholarship organization.

How to Apply

Most applications must be made through the educational institution at which you're enrolled. For more information, please ask at the relevant office at your school.
